The Mitchell Report will be released on Thursday.. By all accounts, at least 50 names will be revealed of players who knowingly took performance enhancing drugs. Some will be validations of what is already known, others will be surprises. The bigger story will be the big cloud that will be cast over the game as rumors and heresay become fact to a certain degree.
I have my own feelings on the report itself. I’m not sure it will tell the whole story. I wish it would. I’d rather have it all out on the table now than hear about it endlessly for the next few years. We’ve already had players with direct knowledge come out and say they did not speak to Mitchell and his team. Additionally, Mitchell undercuts himself by his position with the Red Sox (wonder where that Paul Byrd leak came from during the playoffs?) and Walt Disney (owners of ESPN).
Suspensions will likely be in the vein of what we’ve already seen with Jay Gibbons and Jose Guillen (15 days). If that’s the case, it’s no big deal. Consider that Guillen got the suspension as he was signing a contract paying him $36 million over three years. Are steroids and HGH that bad if they pay so well?
As an A’s fan, my bigger issue would be with players that I root for and having them tied to this scandal. Granted, Oakland can tie it’s 4th World Series trophy in 1989 to a number of players who were juicing (Canseco, Big Mac and likely a few more). We also have the A’s hero and MVP Jason Giambi who has admitted his own wrongdoing. Something tells me we’ll have a few more names in the mix. Not basing it on any knowledge but just a hunch.
